New research reveals that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a major health publication shows that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users using such medications must be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to original weight within about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the injections accounts for the accelerated regain.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Accounts
People who have discontinued the medication describe a intense resurgence of appetite.
"It was like something flipping and you become extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural management.
